Obama's Executive Order Lifts Restrictions on Stem Cell Research Funding

Stefany Shaheen of New Hampshire and her 9-year-old daughter,
Elle, who has type 1 diabetes, greet President Obama Monday,
March 9, 2009, in the East Room of the White House after he signed
the Stem Cell Executive Order and the Presidential Memorandum on
Scientific Integrity.  Stephany Shaheen is the daughter - and Elle the
granddaughter - of U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen.  Lawrence A. Soler,
Executive Vice President of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation,
appears directly behind Elle.

Earlier today, President Obama signed an Executive Order ending federal restrictions on embryonic stem cell research.  This is a tremendous step forward for medical research, and for JDRF--a step that has been almost ten years in the making.

JDRF has also made the following stem cell fact sheets available:
  • Stem Cell Therapies
  • Embyonic Stem Cell Research: A History
  • SCNT Research Technique
  • Reprogramming and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
  • Islet Transplantation

  • Read the full text of JDRF's press release by clicking here.  Read JDRF International Chairman Mary Tyler Moore's statement and additional media coverage of the event.

Please take a minute to call the White House and thank President Obama.  You can view our talking points and get the White House phone number by viewing our latest action alert here.

Thank you again to all of our advocates, nationwide, that made this accomplishment possible.  Also, stay tuned for the next step on the stem cell issue-getting legislation passed by Congress to codify the President's Executive Order.
